In a bid to support local agriculture and alleviate economic hardship, 40 female farmers across Delta State received grants totaling N10 million on Thursday to enhance their agro-businesses. Additionally, 1,200 indigent households benefited from food item donations facilitated by Oluremi Tinubu, Nigeria’s First Lady, and Tobore Oborevwori, Delta’s First Lady.
The initiative, sponsored by the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) in partnership with the You Matter Charity Foundation, aims to address the economic challenges faced by many Nigerians. The grants and food distributions were part of a larger effort to cushion the effects of rising costs and tough living conditions.
Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, who represented the First Lady at the event in Asaba, emphasized the program’s focus on uplifting indigent women. “Our mother, the First Lady, is deeply concerned about the economic struggles of Nigerians, and this initiative is part of her efforts to relieve the stress on families,” she said.
Oborevwori highlighted that each farmer received N250,000 to invest in their businesses and urged them to use the funds wisely. “Do not eat your seed so that you can be sure of a harvest tomorrow,” she advised. She also called on Deltans to remain hopeful and practice charity during these challenging times.
The event also saw the distribution of 1,200 bags of rice along with additional items such as noodles, cooking oil, and other essential consumables. These goods were contributed through a collaboration between the Renewed Hope Initiative and the state government, with the support of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who added to the supplies.
Commissioners Pat Ajudua (Women Affairs), Orode Uduagha (Humanitarian Affairs), and Cal Areyenka (Agriculture) commended the First Ladies for their compassion and the success of the partnership in delivering impactful support to the community. They urged the beneficiaries to make the most of the grants and resources provided.
The recipients expressed gratitude, with Hope Egbogbare, a farmer from Isoko North, saying the N250,000 grant would significantly expand her poultry business. **Justine Emelue**, who received food items, noted that the support would help her family during this time of high prices in the market.
This initiative underscores the importance of community support and collaboration in addressing economic hardship, especially for vulnerable populations like women and farmers.
