Nigeria Boosts Wheat Production with Support for 2,000 Farmers in Niger State
Share

The Federal Government has provided subsidized agricultural inputs to 8,000 wheat farmers in Gombe State to boost dry-season wheat cultivation under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Dr. Ibrahim Bomoi, Gombe State Coordinator for the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday. He explained that each farmer received two bags of NPK fertilizer, one bag of Urea, and 50kg of wheat seeds. The subsidies cover 50% of fertilizer costs and 75% of wheat seed costs, easing the financial burden on farmers.

The farmers, selected from Nafada, Kaltungo, Yamaltu Deba, and Dukku local government areas, are expected to receive their inputs within 10 days to commence cultivation.

“The Federal Government’s support is crucial given the cost-intensive nature of wheat farming. Aggregators have been assigned to farmer clusters to ensure efficient input use and prevent market glut,” Bomoi stated.

He also noted that the initiative builds on earlier government efforts to support wet-season farmers. Over 6,120 farmers in the state received subsidized inputs for cultivating sorghum, rice, and maize.

The coordinator urged beneficiaries to maximize the opportunity by properly utilizing the inputs, emphasizing the importance of this program in enhancing food security and improving farmers’ livelihoods.
