Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Fund Nigerian AI Projects in $5m for AI solutions Award
Share

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has bestowed accolades upon four pioneering projects from Nigeria, hailing them as victors of its latest AI Solutions Award. In a move that resonates deeply within the realm of global health and development, these projects have leveraged AI-enabled large language models (LLMs) to create innovative solutions tailored to their communities.

Championing the cause of global equity, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation sought proposals with a laser focus on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Nearly 50 grant recipients, including distinguished Nigerian awardees, emerged from this initiative. These projects demonstrate how responsible and judicious employment of AI-driven LLM technology can tackle the world’s most pressing health and developmental challenges.

Nigeria’s representation among the awardees signifies a significant stride towards local innovation for global impact. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has underscored the importance of integrating the perspectives and insights of LMIC researchers into the evolution of AI technologies to ensure equitable benefits across regions.

The project titled “Integration of a Large Language Model (LLM) for Women-Centered Care” led by Nneka Mobisson of mDoc Healthcare in Lagos aims to amplify the capabilities of the Kem chatbot. This virtual self-care coach for low-income women of reproductive age in Nigeria will be powered by ChatGPT-4, enabling it to deliver accurate and evidence-based information to user queries.

The initiative “A Large Language Model (LLM) Tool to Support Frontline Health Workers in Low-Resource Settings,” led by Nirmal Ravi of EHA Clinics Ltd. in Kano, seeks to provide invaluable “second opinions” to community health workers (CHEWs). By leveraging ChatGPT-4, the project aims to create scalable and cost-effective means of delivering reliable medical insights in LMICs

Olubayo Adekanmbi of Data Science Nigeria, based in Lagos, spearheads the project “Leveraging a Large Language Model (LLM) for Financial Inclusion.” This innovative endeavor envisions a multilingual, voice-based chatbot designed to elucidate complex financial concepts. By catering to informal traders, women business owners, and smallholder farmers, the project aims to provide tailored financial support.

Chinazo Anebelundu of DSN Ai Innovations Limited, also based in Lagos, is at the helm of “AI for Education Delivery: Adaptive Learning Content for Rural Students.” This forward-looking initiative intends to harness AI-driven technologies, including GPT and DeepBrain text-to-video AI, to construct an engaging STEM-focused multimedia learning platform. By targeting rural students, this project endeavors to heighten their educational engagement.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s decision to recognize these Nigerian projects underscores the critical role of LMIC researchers and innovators in driving AI advancements. These forward-thinking initiatives serve as a testament to the foundation’s commitment to fostering innovation within communities that can benefit the most from AI-driven solutions.

These projects illuminate the potential for AI to effect meaningful change across diverse domains, from healthcare to finance and education. The remarkable journey of these Nigerian innovators exemplifies the impact that localized AI solutions can have on a global scale. As the world moves towards a future driven by technology, these projects stand as beacons of inclusive innovation, offering hope and tangible progress for the underserved.
