The Edo State Government, in collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), is taking significant steps to enhance the Ease of Doing Business (EODB) in Edo State. The recent meeting held at the Edo State Investment Promotion Office (ESIPO) focused on evaluating past achievements and strategizing for future improvements in the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) ratings.
GIZ has been a steadfast supporter of Edo State’s EODB mission, contributing significantly to its successes. The meeting served as a platform to assess tangible achievements and plan for the future.
A primary focus of the discussion was to streamline processes for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) operating in Edo State. The aim is to reduce obstacles and create a more efficient business environment.
Simplifying business-related procedures and minimizing bureaucratic complexities emerged as a key priority. These measures can greatly enhance the overall EODB environment.
Recognizing the importance of reducing business costs, both parties emphasized the need for measures that make it more affordable, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises.
The ongoing installation of the One-Stop Shop (OSS) at the State Secretariat Complex was highlighted as a transformative initiative. This project aims to enhance access to essential services and information for businesses, which is expected to significantly benefit Edo State.
Challenges related to road infrastructure and energy generation were also addressed. While the 95MW Ossiomo Power Plant currently serves key projects, ensuring affordable electricity for small businesses emerged as a priority. Efforts are underway in collaboration with organizations like the Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (REAN) and the Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND) to provide affordable power, particularly in rural areas.
The meeting emphasized the importance of increased collaboration among various government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to streamline processes effectively. Enhanced cooperation is seen as a crucial step to eliminate redundancy and enhance overall efficiency.
Representatives from GIZ reiterated their unwavering commitment to supporting Edo State in its EODB initiatives. Aftercare Services were also highlighted as a critical component. Ongoing efforts to strengthen aftercare services have already benefited numerous businesses in Edo State.
This collaboration reflects the dedication of the Edo State Government and GIZ to improving the Ease of Doing Business and attracting more investments to the state. It is poised to drive economic growth and prosperity in Edo State, setting a remarkable example of business-friendly governance in Nigeria.
