Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has issued a stern warning to electricity distribution companies (DisCos), stating that their licences could be revoked due to ongoing power shortages nationwide.
Despite generation companies (GenCos) increasing power output to 4,000MW, certain DisCos are failing to adequately distribute the power supplied by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), prompting concerns from the Ministry of Power.
Adelabu emphasized that willful non-performance will not be tolerated, and DisCos must be held accountable for their actions, with severe consequences, including licence revocation, on the table.
The minister instructed TCN to prioritize repair works on damaged transmission towers and power lines to improve supply in affected regions, while steps are taken to clear debts owed to power generation and gas supply companies.
Adelabu has summoned chief executives of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IEDC), alongside the managing director of TCN, to explain the ongoing challenges in power distribution.
Despite efforts to enhance generation performance, vandalism of power infrastructure and distribution inefficiencies persist, particularly in regions like Abuja, Benin, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan.
Plans are underway to settle outstanding debts owed to power generation and gas supply companies, aiming to alleviate financial strain and contribute to improved generation levels nationwide.
Adelabu urged electricity consumers to remain patient as the Ministry works tirelessly to address these issues and provide better service to all Nigerians.
