NCC Temporarily Suspend Three Categories of Telecoms Licenses
Share

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) announced that it will temporarily suspend the issuance of three types of telecom licenses starting May 17, 2024. These licenses include the Interconnect Exchange Licence, Mobile Virtual Network Operator Licence, and Value Added Service Aggregator Licence. This decision was disclosed by Mr. Reuben Muoka, the Director of Public Affairs at the NCC.

According to Mr. Muoka, the suspension aims to allow the commission to conduct a comprehensive review of the current state of these licenses. This review will cover aspects such as the level of competition, market saturation, and the dynamics within these specific sectors of the telecommunications industry.

The NCC’s statement clarified that during the suspension period, which begins on May 17, 2024, no new applications for these licenses will be accepted. However, applications that are already pending before the commission will still be reviewed and considered on their individual merits.

This action is in line with the NCC’s mandate under the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003 to grant and renew licenses, promote fair competition, and develop the communications industry in Nigeria. The review is expected to ensure a balanced and competitive market environment.
