In simple English, biosecurity is measures put in place to prevent the entry of disease-causing microbes into your farm.
Diseases spread fast if they have a medium of moving from place to place. The most virulent diseases sometimes are the fastest in spreading, as such it becomes very important to secure your farm against such. This is called BIOSECURITY.
A number of measures can be used which include but are not limited to:
Using a leg dip at the entrance of your farm
Using a car dip at your farm entrance
Limiting entry into your farm at certain periods of the year
Fumigation at periodic intervals
etc.
May I state categorically that YOUR FARM IS NEITHER A ZOO NOR AMUSEMENT PARK, with this in mind there is no point in allowing different persons to enter your farm in the name of sightseeing. Whoever the person is, if they don’t have any cogent reason to be on your farm, don’t allow them into your farm.
If your biosecurity measures must work, you as the farm owner must lead by example by obeying all laid down biosecurity rules.
Please be informed that having biosecurity measures on your farm should not in any way make you lackadaisical or stop you from periodic medication/vaccination of your livestock. It shouldn’t stop the periodic application of fungicides and the like on your crops.
You are into agribusiness to make money therefore you must do all it takes, all within your reach to ensure that motive is met. Disease outbreaks can wipe off a whole farm that occupies hectares of land, they say that PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE, in agriculture, but that statement was talking about BIOSECURITY
Based on what we have discussed today, can you say that your farm is currently biosecured?
Wishing you success in your Agricultural journey.
