The United Kingdom Government, through its West Africa Research and Innovation Hub (WARIH), has introduced the Sankore project, an initiative designed to enhance technology and innovation in Nigeria and Ghana. The project aims to drive economic growth in these countries with funding of up to £1.9 million.
The announcement was made by Ndidiamaka Eze, Senior Press and Public Affairs Officer at the British High Commission in Nigeria, on Tuesday. Named after a historical West African center of learning, Sankore will forge new partnerships with non-profit organizations and UN agencies in both nations.
UK Minister for Africa, Lord Collins, unveiled the Sankore project at a press conference in Accra on September 17, 2024. He encouraged non-profits and UN agencies to submit innovative proposals that will strengthen the UK’s collaboration with Nigeria and Ghana in science, technology, and innovation.
“This initiative aims to enhance global technology sectors and create opportunities for rapidly growing economies to compete internationally. The Sankore grant promotes partnerships, underscoring the belief that collaboration leads to greater success,” Collins stated.
Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji, highlighted the project’s significance for Nigeria. “The Sankore project offers a crucial opportunity to improve Nigeria’s innovation landscape by fostering stronger industry-science links and developing supportive policies. This partnership reflects our commitment to practical solutions for sustainable growth,” Nnaji said.
British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter, emphasized the project’s role in advancing Nigeria’s technology sector. “Sankore demonstrates the UK’s dedication to innovation and sustainable development in Nigeria. It will enhance partnerships between businesses and innovators, addressing critical gaps in key economic sectors,” Baxter noted.
The Sankore initiative is part of the UK-Africa Technology and Innovation Partnerships Programme, complementing other UK-supported projects like FSD Africa, Manufacturing Africa, MOBILIST, and British International Investments, all aimed at fostering economic growth and private sector development across West Africa.
