The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is set to roll out a phased contactless passport renewal system, starting November 1, 2024, in Canada. This digital service allows Nigerians to renew passports online, reducing the need for in-person visits to NIS offices. Following Canada, the service will expand to the UK, USA, and Italy on November 15, and by December 1, it will be accessible in Nigeria and globally.
Announced through NIS’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, this initiative aligns with the NIS’s commitment to global standards. “Individuals can renew their international passports from the comfort of their homes,” the NIS shared, explaining that the new system enhances accessibility for Nigerians worldwide.
Process for Contactless Passport Renewal
The NIS provided detailed steps on how Nigerians can renew their passports through a mobile app or online portal (www.passport.immigration.gov.ng) from November 1, starting in Canada. The app will soon be available on Google Play, the App Store, and Windows Store, enabling streamlined passport renewals.
The process includes:
- Create a Profile: Register with a valid email.
- Eligibility Check: Complete a quick test to ensure passport eligibility.
- Identity Verification: Provide NIN and passport number.
- Personal Information & Document Upload: Enter bio-data and upload documents like NIN slip, birth certificate, and local government certificate.
- Biometric Capture: Use a mobile device for fingerprint biometrics.
- Review & Submit: Confirm accuracy and submit.
- Payment: Complete the online payment.
- Final Submission: Send in the application for processing.
Once approved, renewed passports will be delivered to the address specified by the applicant.
This contactless system currently supports only passport renewals and represents a significant move by the NIS to improve public service efficiency and accessibility for Nigerians worldwide.
