Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has urged Nigerians to focus on agriculture to transform the economy, emphasizing that investment in the sector is critical for sustainable development and food security. Obaseki shared this at the commissioning of the Edo Agriculture Hub in Benin City, a key project designed to support the agricultural foundation his administration has laid over the past eight years.
The governor highlighted the need for a national shift towards agricultural priorities, stressing, “If we are going to turn around the fortunes of Nigeria and Edo State, the priority must be agriculture. It’s more important today than ever as we face widespread food insecurity.”
Under Obaseki’s leadership, Edo State has pursued extensive agricultural projects, including establishing the Edo State College of Agriculture and Natural Resources in Iguoriakhi. This institution is a cornerstone for developing local talent and knowledge in agriculture, positioning Edo as a model for regional growth. He added, “We are committed to showing the way in revitalizing agriculture and utilizing our biggest asset—land—to feed our population.”
Obaseki also pointed out that Edo’s agriculture sector is poised to bolster the state’s economy as the industry continues to be a major contributor to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). By reducing the reliance on food imports and maximizing local production, he believes Edo State can sustain itself and even supply food to less agriculturally endowed regions.
The newly commissioned Edo Agriculture Hub hosts 15 agencies and programs, all dedicated to advancing agricultural development across the state, with room for expansion in the coming decade. “This hub will not only support farmers but also provide the facilities needed for large-scale food production, ensuring we can grow, sustain, and secure our economy,” Obaseki concluded.
