Following a report on the challenges faced by poultry farmers due to the naira scarcity, the Lagos State government has launched efforts to collect at least 300,000 eggs to address the glut in the market.
The scarcity of cash has significantly reduced demand for eggs, as birds continue laying regardless of the low market activity. In a related development, Amo Farm Sieberer Hatchery Limited, through its subsidiary natnudO Foods, has unveiled a new processing plant in Benin City, Edo State.
This new facility aims to empower farmers and entrepreneurs in the region by providing vital resources for poultry farming. In collaboration with Heifer International Nigeria, natnudO Foods has also launched the natnuPreneur Scheme.
This initiative is designed to support farmers, particularly women, with the necessary tools and knowledge to succeed in poultry farming and the sale of animal protein products.
“We believe in the power of partnership and community. Our mission is to ensure that protein is accessible to every Nigerian. By launching the natnuPreneur scheme, we are not only increasing local production but also creating new opportunities for farmers and entrepreneurs across the state,” said Ayoola Oduntan, Group Managing Director of Amo Farm Sieberer Hatchery Ltd.
The scheme has two main models: the natnuPreneur Farmer initiative and the natnuPreneur Seller model. The natnuPreneur Farmer model allows farmers to raise broiler and Noiler chickens under an out-grower system, with the produce being bought back and processed at natnudO’s plants.
Meanwhile, the natnuPreneur Seller model will enable individuals and businesses to venture into the animal protein business. This will operate through a Hub and Spoke system, where each Hub will feature solar-powered freezers to store and distribute products to four Spokes, equipped with pushcarts for daily sales.
Oduntan emphasized the company’s commitment to providing Nigerians with affordable, high-quality animal protein, contributing to food security and supporting sustainable agricultural practices and economic development. The new Benin City plant joins existing facilities in Ibadan, Uyo, and Kaduna, furthering natnudO’s mission of making affordable animal protein widely available across Nigeria.
