In a major crackdown on counterfeit food production, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has closed eight rice shops and a warehouse in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
The facilities were discovered to be involved in producing and distributing counterfeit rice, resulting in the seizure of over 1,600 bags worth an estimated ₦5 billion. The operation, which extended to the Wuse and Garki markets in Abuja, was conducted under the directive of the NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, as part of efforts to protect public health during the festive season.
Investigations revealed that counterfeit rice was being repackaged in branded bags, including popular names such as Big Bull, Royal Stallion, and Tomato Aposo, to deceive unsuspecting consumers. Additionally, empty branded bags were found at the Karu facility, further exposing the scale of the fraudulent operation.
The Director in charge of the FCT, Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe, issued a stern warning to counterfeiters to desist from such practices or face legal action. He also confirmed that suspects apprehended during the raid would be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.
NAFDAC’s swift intervention highlights its commitment to ensuring food safety and protecting consumers from the dangers of counterfeit products.
