The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has disclosed that the average price to refill a 5kg Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinder in Nigeria rose to N7,177.27 in December 2024, reflecting a 1.26% increase from November’s price of N7,088.16. Compared to December 2023, this marks a staggering 44.62% increase from N4,962.87.
Similarly, the cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder averaged N17,274.16 in December 2024, showing a slight month-on-month decline of 0.05% from November’s price of N17,283.58. However, on a year-on-year basis, the price soared by 50.08%, up from N11,510.16 in December 2023.
Price Variations Across States
For 5kg cylinders:
Highest prices: Taraba (N8,074.41), Lagos (N7,910.71), and Benue (N7,900.00).
Lowest prices: Delta (N6,455.00), Ondo (N6,683.33), and Zamfara (N6,778.57).
For 12.5kg cylinders:
Highest prices: Taraba (N20,290.75), Yobe (N19,000.00), and Rivers (N18,710.94).
Lowest prices: Kebbi (N15,733.33), Nasarawa (N15,875.00), and Kwara (N16,109.00).
Reducing Cooking Gas Costs
Speaking at the 2024 National Conference of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM), themed “Sustainable Energy Growth in Nigeria – LPG and the Future,” Suresh Kumar, Managing Director of NIPCO Plc, emphasized the importance of boosting domestic LPG production.
Kumar urged the government to support local refineries, including the Dangote Refinery, to reduce reliance on imported LPG. “Greater local production will drive down retail prices, reduce exposure to foreign exchange fluctuations, and make LPG more accessible to Nigerians,” Kumar stated.
With rising costs, the call for enhanced domestic gas production aligns with efforts to make clean energy affordable and sustainable for households across the country.
