inDrive Calls for Specialized Insurance for Ride-Hailing Drivers
Share

Urban mobility platform inDrive has urged policymakers and insurers to develop motor insurance products tailored specifically to the needs of e-ride-hailing drivers. The call was made by inDrive’s Government Relations Specialist, Mary-Anne Momoh-Ige, during a webinar organised by Coronation Insurance, titled *Beyond Compliance: Demystifying Third-Party Motor Insurance—Legal Requirements, Coverage & Benefits, and Claims Administration.

Momoh-Ige highlighted the challenges ride-hailing drivers face in securing appropriate insurance coverage due to gaps in vehicle classification. She explained that the current system only categorises vehicles as either commercial or personal, leaving ride-hailing drivers—who use their cars for both private and business purposes—without a clear insurance framework.

“The insurance policy must evolve to accommodate ride-hailing platforms,” she said. “Vehicle registration does not currently recognise the dual-use nature of these cars, making it difficult for drivers to access suitable coverage.”

She also noted inDrive’s commitment to ensuring that drivers have proper documentation and insurance during the onboarding process. However, she pointed out that many drivers remain unaware of the coverage, benefits, and legal implications of insurance, a gap that inDrive is working to bridge through sensitisation efforts, grassroots mobilisation, and collaboration with regulators.

The webinar brought together key industry stakeholders, including representatives from the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Road Safety Corps. Discussions centred on third-party motor insurance, which is legally required for all vehicle owners and provides coverage for damages or injuries caused to another person, vehicle, or property in an accident where the insured driver is at fault.

Panellists stressed the need for increased public education on insurance policies, as many drivers fail to secure adequate protection due to a lack of awareness. The session is part of a broader initiative by Coronation Insurance and industry stakeholders to enhance compliance with third-party motor insurance regulations, ensuring greater protection for drivers, passengers, and road users.
