The Adamawa State Government has committed N2 billion to procure essential agricultural inputs as part of efforts to tackle food insecurity and enhance local farming activities. Prof. David Jatau, the state’s Commissioner for Agriculture, shared the details during an interview on Monday in Yola.
The initiative aims to support farmers and youth by providing vital inputs such as fertilizers, seeds, and pesticides ahead of the farming season. This funding will be distributed across all 21 local government areas (LGAs) in the state as part of the government’s broader agricultural intervention program.
One of the key components of the plan is the development of 300 hectares of farmland in each LGA. These lands will be allocated to 300 youths, who will receive subsidized farm inputs and retain the full proceeds from their harvests.
Jatau emphasized the importance of early support for farmers, noting that in the past, assistance was provided later in the season. This time, the distribution of 10,000 bags of assorted fertilizers has already begun, with six LGAs—Madagali, Michika, Hong, Maiha, Demsa, and Ganye—already benefiting from the initiative. By the next rainy season, the program will expand to the remaining LGAs.
In addition to addressing food security, the program aims to reduce youth unemployment. Jatau highlighted that many young people in the state are keen to engage in agriculture but lack the financial capital to do so. Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s intervention is expected to combat rising violence and criminal activity linked to hunger and lack of opportunities.
The initiative also includes training on climate-smart agriculture, covering soil testing, fertilizer application, and other techniques to optimize yield. Furthermore, partnerships with organizations like the Northeast Development Commission (NEDC) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) will strengthen the program’s impact.
By empowering the youth and improving farming practices, the state government aims to enhance food security, boost agricultural productivity, and create sustainable livelihoods for its citizens.
