FIRS Extends Tax Office Operations to Weekends in June to Ease Companies’ Filing Process
Share

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has extended the working hours of all tax offices across Nigeria to include weekends throughout June 2025. The decision is aimed at assisting companies to meet the statutory June 30 deadline for filing their Companies Income Tax (CIT) returns.

The Executive Chairman of FIRS, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, issued the directive as part of the agency’s continued drive to align its operations with its customer-centric vision. According to him, this move is a practical demonstration of FIRS’ commitment to removing barriers to tax compliance and supporting businesses during the peak of the tax season.

A statement released by the Special Adviser on Media to the FIRS Chairman, ‘Dare Adekanmbi, explained that the agency recognises the pressure many companies face during this period, particularly those whose financial year ends on December 31. These companies, by law, must complete their annual filings by June 30.

“To ease the process for taxpayers, enhance service delivery, and maximise tax collection during this critical period, management has approved the extension of tax office operations to weekends for June 2025,” read a joint directive issued by the agency’s three coordinating directors.

The FIRS noted that this strategic adjustment is not only about extending working hours but also about demonstrating responsiveness to the needs of taxpayers. The service added that additional personnel and resources would be deployed where necessary to ensure that the extended hours translate into efficient and timely services.

Dr. Adedeji emphasised that the move would improve voluntary compliance, reduce last-minute rush and bottlenecks, and help companies avoid penalties associated with late submissions.

He also reiterated the importance of collaboration between the FIRS and the private sector to sustain Nigeria’s revenue base. “A seamless and supportive tax administration fosters greater trust between tax authorities and taxpayers. It is this trust we aim to build and sustain,” he said.

Tax experts have welcomed the decision, describing it as a proactive step to accommodate businesses during a typically demanding period. They also called on companies to take advantage of the weekend operations to ensure they meet their tax obligations without delay.

With Nigeria intensifying efforts to diversify its revenue base and reduce dependence on oil, efficient tax administration has become a critical priority. By expanding access and easing compliance procedures, FIRS continues to position itself as a modern and responsive revenue agency.
