NELFUND Disburses N56.85 billion loans to 298,124 Students in One Year

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has issued a directive to all accredited tertiary institutions to urgently verify and upload their students’ data on the newly digitised Student Loan Application System (SLAS). This is a crucial requirement for facilitating the timely approval and disbursement of student loans across the country.

The announcement was made on Wednesday in Abuja through a statement by NELFUND’s Director of Strategic Communications, Mrs Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, who confirmed that SLAS has been fully upgraded to a digital platform. The digitisation aims to streamline the loan application process, making it more efficient for both institutions and students.

With the system now live, institutions that have not yet on-boarded are required to immediately send access requests mail to:[email protected] to begin the verification and upload process. Once granted access, each institution will be able to monitor student loan activity via a real-time dashboard, verify submitted applications, and track the progress of disbursements.

“This is a critical step that ensures the timely processing and disbursement of approved student loans,” Oluwatuyi said. She added that institutions must act without delay in the interest of their students, as the verification and upload of data by schools are mandatory before any loan can be approved or disbursed.

She further explained that students whose application statuses currently read “Verified” have successfully passed the initial review stage. However, final disbursement of funds will only occur after their institution completes the required data upload and verification steps. Once this is done, the application status will be updated to “Disbursed,” signifying that payment of fees has been processed.

The move is part of a broader effort by NELFUND to modernize the administration of student loans in Nigeria, ensuring transparency, accountability, and timely financial support for students in need.
