The Lagos State Government has announced the rollout of a digital addressing system set to begin on July 1, 2025, as part of efforts to ease business operations, expand access to essential services, and boost state revenue.
According to the Special Adviser to the Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, the initiative—called the Lagos Identifier Programme, will digitise street names and house numbers, embedding them in scannable barcodes. This system is expected to support key sectors including housing, transportation, security, emergency response, taxation, and planning.
The pilot phase will start in Ikeja Local Council, which has over 23,000 properties. The digital numbering and installation process will be executed by state agencies in collaboration with a technical partner.
Officials say the system marks a major step towards making Lagos a fully smart state. Beyond the technology, the programme is designed to have practical benefits for residents, improving service delivery and enabling the government to respond more effectively to local needs.
Residents with subdivided properties are being urged to come forward for re-identification. The government plans to gradually expand the project to other local councils after completing the pilot in Ikeja.
The technical partner explained that scanning the barcoded address plates will provide residents with access to various information linked to each property, laying the groundwork for smarter city management and better civic engagement.
