The Federal Government has kicked off a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion training programme targeted at lady mechanics in Edo State, in a move to boost women’s participation in Nigeria’s transitioning automotive sector.
The training, which runs from June 30 to July 4, 2025, is a joint initiative by the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), the Edo State Government, and the Lady Mechanic Initiative (LMI). It is being held in Benin City.
According to NADDC Director-General, the programme is tailored specifically for women in the automotive field, equipping them with hands-on skills in CNG conversion technology. He noted that this initiative not only strengthens capacity in alternative fuel systems but also opens doors for innovation and entrepreneurship among female mechanics.
He emphasized that as Nigeria embraces cleaner and more affordable energy solutions in transportation, it is vital that women are not left behind. “Promoting diversity and inclusion in the sector ensures that women can fully contribute to and benefit from the CNG technology revolution,” he said.
The initiative reflects ongoing national efforts to reduce reliance on petrol and diesel by adopting environmentally friendly alternatives such as CNG, while also creating pathways for inclusive economic participation in technical industries.
