In a bid to support small-scale enterprises and address persistent power challenges, the Sokoto State Government has launched the distribution of solar-powered electronics to businesses across Sokoto South and Sokoto North Local Government Areas, targeting 5,000 beneficiaries in total across the state’s 23 LGAs.
The initiative was unveiled as part of the second anniversary celebrations of Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s administration. Speaking at the official launch, Commissioner for Energy and Petroleum Resources, Alhaji Sanusi Danfulani, said the programme is aimed at enhancing access to renewable energy and promoting sustainable power solutions for small-scale business owners grappling with unstable electricity supply from the national grid.
“This programme is one of several measures taken to support economic development and improve livelihoods,” Danfulani said, adding that it aligns with Governor Aliyu’s nine-point Smart Agenda for inclusive development.
Malam Muhammad Garba, Director of Renewable Energy at the Ministry, encouraged beneficiaries to handle the solar-powered equipment with care and make the most of the opportunity to improve their businesses and overall productivity.
He emphasized that the intervention reflects the government’s commitment to exploring alternative energy sources and building a more resilient and sustainable electricity landscape in Sokoto State.
Items distributed include:
Solar panels
Solar-powered standing fans
Solar-powered light valves
Voltage stabilisers
And other essential energy components.
Beneficiaries applauded the initiative, describing it as a vital step toward enhancing the business environment in Sokoto and reducing dependence on inconsistent grid power.
In a related development, Governor Ahmed Aliyu has signed the 2024 Sokoto State Electricity Act into law, establishing the Sokoto State Electricity Regulatory Commission.
The new commission will regulate the electricity market within the state, in line with the 2023 Federal Electricity Act, which decentralizes power sector governance and allows subnational governments to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity independently.
With this move, Sokoto joins the ranks of Nigerian states actively implementing state-led power reforms, a crucial step toward energy security, local economic empowerment, and investment in renewable energy infrastructure.
The twin developments mark a significant leap forward in Sokoto State’s energy agenda, aiming to unlock economic opportunities, empower small businesses, and improve the quality of life through clean and consistent power access.
