Nigeria’s Tax System Hindering Economic Growth, Says Fiscal Policy Chairman
Share

In a bid to increase public understanding and promote compliance with the newly signed tax reform laws, the Federal Government has launched a grassroots awareness campaign across key areas of Ibadan, Oyo State.

Themed “Irọrun fún Mẹkúnù” (Relief for the Common Man), the initiative was led by the Presidential Community Engagement Office (South-West) in partnership with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). It focused on helping everyday Nigerians including traders, transport workers, artisans, and small business owners ; understand how the tax reforms directly benefit them.

Organisers used mobile banners, placards, sound systems, and multilingual educational materials to simplify and explain the core provisions of the reform. The campaign targeted public places, markets, and transit hubs to reach a wide and diverse audience.

Residents were educated on key aspects of the reform, such as the exemption of low-income earners from personal income tax, reduced tax pressure on small businesses, streamlined payment systems, and increased fiscal autonomy for state and local governments.

Speaking during the exercise, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (South-West), Moremi Ojudu, emphasised that the outreach was not just about enforcing compliance, but about empowering Nigerians with knowledge.

“The tax reform is here to make life easier for every Nigerian. It affects market women, mechanics, students, commercial drivers, and everyone who earns a living,” she said. “For example, traders who used to deal with multiple levies can now breathe easier under a simplified system. Low-income earners will no longer lose part of their small salaries, and small business owners can grow without fear of excessive taxation.”

She added that the campaign is part of the broader Renewed Hope Agenda to ensure that citizens — especially those in underserved communities are not left behind as the government pushes reforms intended to promote fairness, equity, and economic growth.

According to her, this effort is designed to bring clarity to citizens on how the changes improve their livelihoods and encourage voluntary tax compliance by highlighting the real-life impact of the reforms.
