The Federal Government has dismissed a viral social media video claiming that a new “revolutionary drug” capable of curing diabetes would be distributed free to Nigerians.
In a statement released on Sunday via the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare’s official X handle, Alaba Balogun, Head of Information and Public Relations, described the video as false, misleading, and maliciously manipulated.
The video, which has been widely circulated online, claims that Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, announced the launch of a drug that would “save everyone from diabetes” and be delivered free to homes. It also features chaotic scenes allegedly at pharmacies, with police intervening to manage crowds seeking the supposed drug.
According to the Ministry, the footage is a doctored mix of altered Channels TV news clips and digitally manipulated segments of the minister’s public appearances. Officials stressed that no such drug has been announced or approved, and the minister has never made such a statement.
The Ministry urged the public to verify health-related claims from credible official sources and warned against engaging with fraudulent posts requesting personal details in exchange for medical products. It reiterated that diabetes treatment remains part of Nigeria’s ongoing non-communicable diseases programme, implemented through accredited facilities in partnership with state governments and licensed professionals.
Authorities have begun working with law enforcement and regulatory agencies, including NAFDAC, the Nigerian Police Force, and the National Broadcasting Commission, to trace the source of the misinformation and take appropriate action.
The Ministry reminded Nigerians to rely only on trusted health information channels, such as its official website, verified social media handles, and accredited healthcare providers. It reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to delivering evidence-based healthcare solutions and ensuring transparent, credible communication with the public.
