The Federal Government has approved a ₦1.5 billion support package for ginger farmers across the country in a move aimed at boosting agricultural productivity, enhancing food security, and creating economic opportunities for young people.
The announcement was made by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Chief Sunday Dare, during a televised interview in Abuja. He explained that the initiative would directly benefit about 500,000 young farmers, many of whom are already engaged in ginger cultivation and agribusiness ventures.
According to him, the financial intervention is part of the administration’s broader strategy to strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural value chains, particularly in crops where the country enjoys comparative advantage. Ginger, one of Nigeria’s key export commodities, has gained international recognition for its quality and demand in food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries. However, farmers have continued to struggle with limited access to financing, low yields, and inadequate processing infrastructure.
The newly approved fund is expected to address these gaps by providing targeted financial support, improving farmers’ access to inputs, and stimulating agribusiness investments. Government officials believe that beyond improving production levels, the move will help stabilize incomes for farmers, promote rural development, and attract more young people into agriculture at a time when the nation is pushing for economic diversification.
This intervention also aligns with efforts to cushion the impact of recent economic pressures, such as rising food prices and foreign exchange challenges, by encouraging local production and reducing reliance on imports. By channeling funds into ginger farming, authorities hope to strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global spice market while also empowering communities across key producing states.
The government stressed that the initiative will not only provide financial relief but will also create a multiplier effect through job creation, youth empowerment, and expanded opportunities for agribusiness entrepreneurs.
