Over 1,000 entrepreneurs gathered in Lagos last weekend, with hundreds more joining virtually, for a landmark edition of the Lagos SME Bootcamp, an annual event designed to equip small business owners with the tools and knowledge needed to thrive in Nigeria’s challenging economic environment.
The gathering focused on critical challenges facing small enterprises, including access to funding, intellectual property protection, digital marketing, and building brand visibility in competitive markets. Organisers highlighted that while SMEs contribute nearly half of Nigeria’s GDP and provide the majority of jobs, many continue to struggle with financing, legal safeguards, and customer acquisition.
Throughout the day, experts led sessions on business fundamentals, growth strategies, and adapting to market shifts. Legal specialists stressed the importance of protecting business ideas, trademarks, and creative content, warning that failure to secure intellectual property often results in lost revenue. Marketing and branding sessions encouraged entrepreneurs to tell authentic stories, connect with customers, and leverage digital platforms to build trust and loyalty.
The Founder’s Spotlight featured successful business leaders who shared insights on navigating regulatory challenges, achieving product-market fit, and scaling operations while remaining customer-focused. Another session explored sustainable business models, leadership, and innovation, equipping entrepreneurs to navigate uncertainty while maintaining growth and competitiveness.
The bootcamp also hosted a marketplace showcasing over 75 businesses and a pitch competition where three entrepreneurs were awarded grants to scale their ventures.
Since its launch, the Lagos SME Bootcamp has reached thousands of small business owners, providing mentorship, training, and networking opportunities that have helped participants strengthen operations, expand market reach, and build resilient, sustainable enterprises.
