Dangote Group has entered a strategic partnership with Honeywell International to drive the next phase of expansion at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, a move expected to significantly increase Nigeria’s refining output and strengthen Africa’s industrial base. The collaboration will provide advanced technology and specialized services that will enable the refinery to raise its processing capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028, positioning the complex among the largest petroleum refining facilities in the world.
Under the agreement, Honeywell will supply catalysts, equipment and process technologies that will allow the refinery to process a wider variety of crude grades while improving product quality and operational efficiency. The company’s long-standing involvement in the project through its UOP division, which has supported the refinery with proprietary refining systems and high-performance equipment since 2017, will form the foundation for the latest phase of development.
Dangote Group is also pushing forward with an extensive petrochemical expansion. As part of the broader collaboration, the company will increase its polypropylene output to 2.4 million metric tonnes annually, using Honeywell’s Oleflex technology. Polypropylene, a key industrial material used in packaging, manufacturing and automotive production, is vital to MSME-driven value chains across Africa, and increased supply is expected to stimulate manufacturing growth and reduce reliance on imports.
Beyond refining and petrochemicals, the group is advancing the next stage of its fertilizer expansion plan.
The company announced that its urea production capacity will rise from 3 million metric tonnes to 9 million metric tonnes annually. The existing facility operates on two production trains of 1.5 million metric tonnes each, and the new expansion will introduce four additional trains to serve growing demand in Africa and global markets. The move is expected to support farmers, agro-processors and agribusiness SMEs by making fertiliser more accessible and strengthening regional food security.
Dangote Group said it remains committed to delivering world-class industrial capacity and deepening Nigeria’s energy security. It added that long-term investments, innovative technologies and global partnerships will continue to underpin its strategy for driving sustainable economic growth across the continent.
