The Nigerian Government, through the Ministry of Finance Incorporated, in partnership with NovaCHILL a joint-venture cold storage company owned by Mystrose Agro Commodities is set to launch modern cold-chain warehouses to reduce post-harvest losses and ensure year-round food availability.
The initiative will begin next week with the unveiling of an advanced onion storage hub in Sokoto, followed by a second facility in the South-South region in early 2026. These launches mark the first phases of a broader plan to establish a nationwide cold-chain network that will strengthen Nigeria’s perishable value chains.
NovaCHILL explained that the warehouses will immediately impact food security by reducing losses, stabilizing market supply, lowering consumer prices, and preparing surplus production for export. Farmers are expected to benefit from increased incomes, while the country could earn more foreign exchange from strengthened agricultural exports.
“The rollout of these cold-chain warehouses represents a major step forward in Nigeria’s fight against post-harvest losses,” a NovaCHILL spokesperson said. “Our goal is to empower farmers with reliable storage solutions, improve year-round food availability, and contribute to national food security.”
The initiative highlights the government’s commitment to public-private partnerships that modernize agricultural infrastructure and support local value chains. Analysts note that cold-chain facilities are critical for minimizing losses in staples such as onions, tomatoes, and other perishable commodities.
With the Sokoto hub launch, Nigeria is poised to reduce food waste, enhance farmer livelihoods, and strengthen the agricultural sector. NovaCHILL confirmed that additional facilities will follow in strategic regions, creating a seamless cold-chain backbone for Nigeria’s food system.
“The impact of this initiative goes beyond storage; it represents empowerment for farmers, affordable food for consumers, and a more resilient agricultural sector,” the spokesperson added.
