The Badagry Local Government in Lagos State has announced a N400 million empowerment programme, dubbed the Asiwaju Conditional Cash Transfer, aimed at supporting local families and small businesses across the area. The initiative was unveiled by Chairman Babatunde Hunpe during a news briefing marking his 100 days in office in Ajara, Badagry.
Under the programme, 4,000 families are set to receive N100,000 each to support livelihoods, skill development, and small-business growth. In addition, the administration plans to establish Point-of-Sale (PoS) terminals for 100 residents, further enabling financial inclusion and digital business transactions.
Hunpe highlighted that the empowerment initiative complements broader economic plans targeting youth and women, focusing on entrepreneurship, vocational skills, and local trade development. “Our economic programmes for youths and women, especially in skill development and small-business support, have taken off,” he said.
The chairman also outlined ongoing infrastructure and education efforts designed to create a more enabling environment for businesses and communities. Three strategic link roads are under construction to improve mobility, commerce, and safety, with a target of completing at least 40 roads during his first term. On education, Hunpe announced the delivery of a fully equipped primary school with three classroom blocks, offices, learning facilities, and improved sanitation. “We are not just building structures; we are also building minds that will shape the future of Badagry,” he noted.
In addition, the administration has inaugurated the Badagry Local Government Tourism Committee to revive tourism, create jobs, and promote the area’s cultural heritage. Health and social welfare have also been prioritised, with medical outreach services expanded to underserved communities.
Hunpe assured that traditional rulers, chiefs, and community elders would remain integral partners in local development. He concluded that the first 100 days of his administration had laid a solid foundation for continued empowerment, stating that residents were already beginning to enjoy the benefits of the programmes and trusts invested in the local government.
This MSME-focused empowerment program aims to stimulate economic activity, enhance household incomes, and strengthen the resilience of small businesses in Badagry, positioning the local government as a model for community-driven development in Lagos State.
