The Honnold Foundation has opened applications for its 2026 Core Fund, inviting community-based organisations working to expand equitable access to solar energy to apply for unrestricted grant support. The Fund backs grassroots initiatives that promote clean energy adoption while advancing social equity and environmental sustainability in underserved communities.
About the Honnold Foundation Core Fund
The Core Fund provides unrestricted grant funding to grassroots organisations expanding access to solar energy in ways that centre equity, sustainability, and community ownership. It supports initiatives that deliver lasting environmental and social benefits while empowering marginalised communities to lead their own clean energy transitions.
Why It Matters
Millions of people in underserved and climate-vulnerable regions still lack reliable access to clean and affordable energy. By supporting community-driven solar projects, the Honnold Foundation Core Fund helps reduce reliance on fossil fuels, lower energy costs, and improve livelihoods. The initiative also contributes to climate resilience, economic inclusion, and environmental protection, ensuring that the transition to clean energy benefits those most affected by energy poverty and climate change.
Eligibility Criteria
Eligible applicants must be community-based organisations with a strong local presence and direct engagement with the communities they serve.- Projects should focus primarily on new or upgraded solar infrastructure, including solar home systems, grid-tied solar installations, solar water pumps, or community energy systems.
- Applicants are required to partner with a qualified technical organisation responsible for designing and implementing the solar solution.
- Projects must clearly demonstrate how they will increase social and economic equity while reducing environmental impact.
- Priority consideration is given to organisations led by and serving Indigenous, Black-majority, or historically marginalised communities, including initiatives with strong women’s leadership representation.
Benefits of the Fund
- Successful applicants can receive unrestricted grants ranging from $25,000 to $150,000 per project.
- The flexible funding model allows organisations to deploy resources where they are most needed, supporting community-owned solar solutions that deliver long-term impact.
- Beyond financing, the Fund helps strengthen local capacity for clean energy adoption and sustainable development.
