The African Marine Environment Sustainability Initiative (AFMESI) has announced plans to hold a significant workshop later this month in Lagos, focused on harnessing the potential of the blue economy. This two-day event aims to train 150 early and mid-career professionals in the maritime sector, offering them valuable insights into the evolving field of blue growth.
Dr. Felicia Mogo, the president of AFMESI, shared details of the workshop in a statement released on Tuesday. The event, themed “Achieving Blue Growth in a Changing Climate: Integrating the Coastal Communities,” is designed to empower participants with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the complexities of the blue economy amidst changing climate conditions.
Mogo explained that the workshop’s primary objective is to build the capacity of around 150 individuals who are at the early and mid-stages of their careers in the marine and blue economy sectors. “The free workshop on day two will specifically target the professional development of these participants, helping them to enhance their expertise and contribute effectively to the blue economy,” she said.
The workshop will offer a platform for learning, networking, and collaboration. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with key global and regional stakeholders, including experts from various sectors such as government, industry, academia, and civil society organizations. This interaction is intended to foster discussions on strategies for ensuring the sustainability of blue ecosystems in Africa and beyond, as well as identifying ways to add value to these critical resources.
Dr. Mogo emphasized the workshop’s role in shaping the future of Africa’s blue economy journey. “By bringing together professionals and experts, we aim to address the pressing challenges and opportunities within the marine environment and blue economy. This initiative is crucial for advancing sustainable practices and achieving meaningful growth in this sector.”
Overall, the workshop represents a significant step towards enhancing the capacity of professionals working in the blue economy and supporting Africa’s broader environmental and economic goals.
