Airtel Nigeria’s CEO, Dinesh Balsingh, has revealed that the telecom industry’s operational costs have surged by over 300% in the last 18–24 months, making tariff adjustments crucial for the sector’s sustainability.
In a statement shared on Monday, Balsingh noted that tariffs in Nigeria have remained unchanged for over a decade, despite significant economic pressures. Airtel and other telecom operators have submitted a proposal to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), seeking a 100% tariff increase.
Balsingh explained that the proposed changes aim to balance pricing with rising costs while ensuring high-quality service delivery. He stressed the need for continuous investment in telecommunications infrastructure to meet growing demand across sectors like education, banking, and healthcare.
“The increasing demand for digital services requires us to continually upgrade our networks,” he stated. “These investments come at a cost, one that must be shared proportionally to guarantee long-term viability.”
The tariff adjustments, he said, would enable improved service delivery by expanding coverage, boosting network security, and adopting advanced technologies. He assured Nigerians that the changes would prioritize affordability and minimize consumer impact.
Balsingh reaffirmed Airtel’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s digital transformation, driving innovation, and fostering inclusive growth. “This step will enable us to invest in capacity, expand coverage, and enhance service delivery, ensuring Nigeria remains competitive in the global digital landscape.”
