The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE), an initiative by Afrexim Bank, has raised $6 million through its foundation to support access to quality healthcare for underprivileged Nigerians.
Brian Deaver, CEO of AMCE, announced this during an update on the hospital’s progress, reaffirming that the facility remains on schedule for its June 2025 launch in Abuja. The centre is positioned to reduce the country’s reliance on medical tourism by offering world-class healthcare services and attracting Nigerian doctors in the diaspora to return home and practice locally.
To ensure affordability, the AMCE Foundation was established to receive donations that will subsidize treatment costs for patients unable to afford care. “Additionally, we’ll use those funds for any capital required to expand our services. And it will also be used to fund certain types of research,” Deaver explained.
The hospital is set to provide specialized medical care, including cancer treatment, cardiovascular procedures, and the management of haematological and blood disorders. Deaver highlighted AMCE’s commitment to advanced treatments, stating, “We will not only treat sickle cell disease but also offer a permanent cure using stem cell technology. For patients with heart blockages, we can prevent heart attacks by removing these blockages. In the case of cancer, we will employ various advanced diagnostic and treatment methods.”
To further strengthen its financial foundation, AMCE has secured additional investment from the Bank of Industry and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). This development has reduced Afrexim Bank’s ownership stake in the project, a move Deaver applauded, emphasizing that the increased backing will enhance the centre’s capacity to deliver world-class healthcare.
The hospital is expected to play a key role in revolutionizing healthcare in Nigeria and across Africa, positioning itself as a leading destination for specialized medical treatment while reducing the need for Nigerians to seek care abroad.
Earlier, Deaver led a tour of the hospital site alongside key stakeholders and a federal government delegation headed by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin. The visit underscored the government’s support for the project, which is set to transform the country’s healthcare landscape upon completion.
