The Anambra State Government has announced a strategic partnership with a Chinese consortium of agricultural firms to increase rice productivity and strengthen farmers’ capacities across the state.
The state Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr Forster Ihejiofor, revealed the partnership in Awka, noting that the collaboration will focus on Ayamelum Local Government Area, a key rice-producing region. The consortium will train local farmers in modern farming techniques to improve crop yields, aiming to raise rice output from the current three to four tonnes per hectare to nine to ten tonnes per hectare, similar to benchmarks in China.
Ihejiofor also outlined plans for expanded irrigation infrastructure to mitigate the impact of climate change on rainfall and ensure year-round food production. He added that smart technologies would be introduced to nourish crops and improve moisture retention.
In addition to rice farming initiatives, the state government has distributed over 2.2 million palm and coconut seedlings to approximately 180,000 households, with each family receiving ten seedlings. The commissioner explained that this intervention is designed to create long-term economic benefits, with seedlings capable of generating yields for up to 60 years, potentially lifting families out of poverty.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo has allocated N500 million to fund irrigation projects for rice production at Ifite-Ogwari, with expectations of tripling rice output annually. The state plans to empower at least 100,000 households with seedlings in 2026, using a model tailored to the fragmented land tenure system across communities.
Ihejiofor highlighted the success of the ‘Farm to Feed’ programme launched in August 2025, which encouraged local farmers to boost agricultural production and mitigate rising food costs.
Separately, the Ministry of Information, in partnership with Amansea Cattle Market, has intensified efforts to sensitize youths on the dangers of substance abuse, promoting the state’s anti-drug policy. Dr Law Mefor, the Commissioner for Information, urged young people to avoid drugs to achieve success and lead productive lives.
