Apple and Google have announced a new collaboration that will see Apple Foundation Models run on Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence models and cloud technology, marking a significant partnership between two of the world’s biggest technology companies.
In a joint statement released on Monday, both companies confirmed that the agreement is a multi-year collaboration focused on advancing Apple’s artificial intelligence capabilities. Under the deal, the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be built on Google’s Gemini AI models and supported by Google’s cloud infrastructure.
According to the statement, the collaboration will help power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalised version of Siri expected to be introduced later this year. The companies described the partnership as a move to deliver more advanced, intuitive and user-focused AI experiences across Apple’s ecosystem.
Apple said the decision followed a careful evaluation of available AI technologies, noting that Google’s Gemini models offered the most capable foundation to support its next phase of innovation. The company added that the partnership would unlock new experiences for users without compromising its long-standing approach to privacy.
Despite relying on Google’s AI technology, Apple stressed that its privacy standards remain unchanged. Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and through its Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, ensuring that user data is handled in line with the company’s existing privacy framework.
The collaboration signals a notable shift in the competitive landscape of artificial intelligence, as major technology firms increasingly explore partnerships to accelerate development, manage costs and respond to growing demand for more powerful and personalised AI-driven services.
