Badagry West LCDA Launches 100-Day Empowerment Drive to Boost Entrepreneurs and Small Businesses
Share

As part of activities marking his first 100 days in office, the Chairman of Badagry West Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Rauf Ibrahim Yemaren (RIKAY), has rolled out a comprehensive empowerment program aimed at improving livelihoods and strengthening grassroots economic growth across the council area.

The event, themed “100 Days of Renewed Hope, Action, and Accountability,” saw the distribution of vital work tools and business-support equipment to artisans and small-scale entrepreneurs, as well as direct financial support to traders, widows, the elderly, and persons living with disabilities. Items provided included motorcycles (Okada), grinding machines, tiling tool sets, hair clippers with generator units, wheelchairs, welding machines, and other productivity-enhancing equipment designed to promote self-reliance and sustainable income generation.

In addition to business support, the council chairman donated medical equipment to five primary healthcare centers across the LCDA, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to improving access to quality healthcare services at the grassroots level.

The empowerment program attracted top political leaders and party stakeholders from within and outside the Badagry axis. Leading the delegation was the Lagos State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, represented by the APC Lagos West Senatorial Youth Leader, Rasheed Gboshe.

Other dignitaries in attendance included Sesi Whingan, Member of the House of Representatives, Badagry; Setonji David, Chief Whip of the Lagos State House of Assembly; Solomon Bonu Saanu; Bamgbose A. Joseph, the Apex Leader of Badagry West; and Babatunde Hunpe, Chairman of Badagry Local Government. Former chairmen Hon. Joseph Gbenu and Olusegun Onilude were also present, alongside several community and party leaders.

Stakeholders praised the chairman for translating campaign promises into visible action within a short period, describing the empowerment initiative as a demonstration of responsive leadership and the tangible dividends of democracy.

The 100-day empowerment exercise underscores the Badagry West administration’s determination to expand economic opportunities, stimulate vocational growth, and improve the quality of life for residents across the council area.

The Lagos State Government is intensifying efforts to enhance economic empowerment, social protection, and leadership inclusion for women across the state. Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Bolaji Dada, highlighted these initiatives during the Lagos Women’s Assembly. The event featured safety demonstrations, health screenings, and interactive sessions aimed at improving the welfare and economic stability of women. Mrs. Dada described the new Plus Agenda initiative as a deliberate framework to increase women’s access to skills, funding, healthcare, and protection from violence. Ongoing interventions include 19 tuition-free skills acquisition centres that train over 6,000 women and youths annually, the Micro Enterprise Support Initiative, the Life Skills and Economic Empowerment Programme (LEAP), the Ounje Eko nutrition scheme, agricultural empowerment projects, community-based campaigns against gender-based violence, and free medical outreach programmes across local councils and development areas. “We want every woman in Lagos to win. We want every woman empowered, independent, confident, and productive. A Lagos woman must be an asset and never a liability,” Mrs. Dada said. Wife of Lagos State Governor, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, represented by Mrs. Victoria Oluwu, emphasised that the assembly remains a platform for celebrating the resilience and contribution of Lagos women to the state’s development. She highlighted the government’s commitment to entrepreneurship funding, gender advocacy, poverty reduction programmes, and safe spaces for women and girls. Dr. Sanwo-Olu urged participants to apply lessons from the programme in their homes, businesses, and communities, stressing that meaningful progress for women requires collaboration between government, private sector, civil society, and women themselves.
