Benue State to Launch Livestock Census to End Farmers/Herders Clashes

The Benue State government is set to conduct a livestock census aimed at providing comprehensive statistics on livestock and their owners. This initiative is designed to address the ongoing farmers/herders clashes and other criminal activities across the state. Dr. Aondoaka Asambe, the Principal Special Assistant to the Governor on Livestock Development, emphasized that the census will register farmers, hatcheries, and feed mills, helping to meet local consumption demands and improve livestock production.

Asambe also assured the government’s commitment to revamping the livestock industry by resuscitating all livestock establishments and introducing improved livestock breeds. Additionally, tagging livestock will allow authorities to trace animals to their owners, minimizing crime in the sector.

Highlighting the challenges faced by abattoirs in Makurdi, Asambe pointed out issues such as poor infrastructure, inadequate roads, lack of potable water, and poor hygiene. Mr. Austin Ugwu, Chairman of the Meat Shops Owners Association, called on the government to create a more conducive environment for businesses in the sector.
