Nigeria – Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum has disbursed a grant of N100 million to empower 1,000 unemployed Youths from different wards in Biu Local Government Area of the state.
Zulum, flagging off the distribution at Kadafur Cinema yesterday in Biu town, reiterated that the grant should solely be used as start-up capital for Micro and Small Businesses to stimulate the economy of Biu.
During the visit, the Governor also commissioned a Mega-size Government Secondary School in Buratai village inside Biu for 1,500 students.
The Governor argued that poverty was a major factor in the rise of Boko Haram and that the government must continue its efforts to fight it.
He stated that his administration was making all effort humanly possible to help the state’s most vulnerable residents.
The Governor urged the 1,000 beneficiaries of the N100 million grant to use the funds effectively to improve their standard of living.
According to Saina Buba, commissioner for youth empowerment, sports development, and poverty alleviation, the 1,000 beneficiaries were chosen from wards around the Biu LGA.
Recall that Zulum has since 2019 been actively combating poverty in the state by giving billions of naira to thousands of low-income residents, particularly young people without jobs, people with physical disabilities, and elderly people.
The governor had also introduced economic initiatives that provided small and medium-sized business owners with financial assistance through trade groups in an effort to boost their businesses.
The N100m grant to 1,000 unemployed youths symbolized the fourth of Zulum’s activities in Biu.
