Programme Objective
The programme is dedicated to strengthening higher education in Sub-Saharan Africa to support sustainable development across the region. Through targeted scholarships, we aim to empower individuals pursuing careers in teaching and research at higher education institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa, preparing them to make a significant impact in their communities and fields.
Who Can Apply?
This programme is open to graduates and postgraduates from Sub-Saharan Africa:
- Master’s Applicants: Candidates with a bachelor’s degree.
- Doctoral Applicants: Candidates with a master’s degree.
Scholarships are available for those who wish to pursue development-focused Master’s or PhD studies in their home country (In-Country scholarships) or in another Sub-Saharan African country (In-Region scholarships). We encourage applications from women and candidates from less privileged regions or groups.
Note: In-Country scholarships for students from South Africa are managed separately in cooperation with DAAD and NRF.
Supported Degree Programmes
We support master’s and PhD studies in selected, development-related fields.
Funding Duration
Scholarships cover the standard duration of each course:
- Master’s Programmes: Up to 2 years
- PhD Programmes: Up to 3 years
Scholarship Benefits
Scholarship recipients will receive:
- Monthly Stipend
- Study and Research Allowance
- Thesis Publishing Costs
- Tuition Fees
In addition, In-Region scholarship holders are eligible for:
- Travel Allowance
- Health Insurance

Selection Process
