The country faces significant challenges such as drought, desertification, flooding, and disrupted rainfall patterns, which negatively affect health, wellbeing, and the environment. Agricultural yields in the north have plummeted, leading to high poverty rates, while the south struggles with extreme flooding and waterborne diseases.

In response to these challenges, Climate Smart Nigeria, in partnership with Glow Initiative for Economic Empowerment and supported by Access Bank PLC, is investing in a new generation of young energy leaders to drive energy transition and climate action across Nigeria.

The Climate Leadership Fellowship (Cohort VI) aims to provide expert training for individuals passionate about making a difference in climate leadership, renewable energy applications, climate advocacy, diplomacy, and finance. The program covers a range of topics, including data-driven climate advocacy and awareness, the climate finance landscape, and the Green Climate Fund. Additionally, it focuses on clean cooking, clean energy, solar power, and waste-to-energy sectors, equipping fellows with the knowledge and skills needed to drive positive climate action.

After training, fellows will adopt a school or community to teach climate education, grooming young leaders to promote a climate-resilient nation. Fellows will receive a climate education toolkit and a certificate of climate leadership.

Program Outline

  • Four-week intensive expert training on climate leadership for selected fellows.
  • Fellows who complete the training will receive a climate education toolkit and instruction on its use.
  • Fellows will adopt a school to teach climate change using the toolkit over a four-week period.
  • Fellows will establish climate change leadership clubs in their adopted schools.
  • Fellows are encouraged to demonstrate innovation in their school communities by carrying out small climate change projects.
  • The top five fellows will receive the Climate Champion Award.

Eligibility

  • Open to youth aged 22-40.
  • Demonstrated leadership in climate action and renewable energy.
  • Part of a growing environmental/renewable energy organization or interested in climate leadership (serving Corp members with interest in renewable energy can apply).
  • University graduates.
  • Willing to commit time and effort to adopt a school/community and teach climate literacy for one month.
  • Enthusiastic about clean and renewable energy solutions, sustainable agriculture, recycling, and other eco-friendly practices.
  • Passionate about promoting awareness of climate change.
  • From any part of the world but resident in Nigeria.
    • Selected applicants should be available and willing to teach climate change within their communities using the provided toolkit, participate in the climate leadership expert training, submit a fellowship work plan, and attend all virtual meetings.

    Participants are expected to:

    • Commit 5 hours per week for expert trainings, live calls and other fellowship activities.
    • Adopt a school or community and complete the three-week program teaching climate change.
    • Demonstrate innovation during the Adopt a School/Community program.

Deadline: July 24, 2024
