Share

The African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET) is inviting applications for the 2026 Young Leaders in Research (YLR) Grant, a 12-month research funding opportunity designed to empower early-career African researchers driving policy-relevant studies that shape Africa’s transformation agenda.

The initiative provides emerging researchers in economics and related disciplines with the resources, mentorship, and visibility they need to generate impactful insights that can guide inclusive growth and policy reforms across the continent.

Why It Matters
Africa’s growth depends on sound, evidence-based policies led by Africans who understand the continent’s unique economic and social realities. The YLR Grant is more than financial support — it’s a platform to nurture the next generation of African thinkers and problem-solvers who will influence key transformation sectors such as industry, finance, governance, and sustainable development.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
• Be African nationals or hold permanent residency in any African country.
• Be 35 years old or younger at the time of application.
• Have completed or be enrolled in a master’s degree or higher program.
• Have an academic or professional background in economics or related fields.
• Demonstrate leadership potential and a commitment to advancing Africa’s development.
• Show prior involvement in research through coursework, internships, volunteer work, or independent projects.

Benefits
Successful applicants will receive:
• A research grant of up to $15,000 to support policy-relevant work.
• Mentorship from ACET Senior Fellows and access to professional guidance.
• Networking opportunities through peer learning sessions and collaborative events.
• The chance to publish and present research findings to influential audiences.

Application Requirements
Applicants must submit:
• A concept note (maximum 800 words).
• A statement of purpose (maximum 500 words).
• A current CV.
• Two academic or professional references.

Tips for Applicants
• Focus on research topics that align with Africa’s development priorities such as industrialization, digital transformation, sustainable finance, and inclusive growth.
• Clearly explain how your research could influence policy or contribute to solving a national or regional challenge.
• Highlight your leadership potential and previous research or analytical work.
• Ensure your concept note is clear, realistic, and context-driven.

Application Deadline
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until November 21, 2025.
