If you are a Nigerian graduate ready to make an impact in the health sector, the National Health Fellows Programme (NHFP) opens an opportunity to engage in primary healthcare reform and leadership development through a 12-month full-time fellowship.

The NHFP is delivered by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare via the SWAp Coordination Office under the National Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative. The goal is to mobilise a new cadre of professionals across all 774 Local Government Areas in Nigeria, supporting efforts such as upgrading existing primary health centres and implementing over 8,800 new ones.

For applicants, this means real-world exposure embedded in Nigeria’s health infrastructure, the chance to work in community settings, build leadership skills, and strengthen your professional experience in a priority national programme.

Fellowship Benefits

  • A 12-month full-time fellowship focusing on training, mentorship, and fieldwork.
  • A stipend to support living expenses while you participate.
  • Placement within a Local Government Area aligned with your State of Origin, offering active engagement in primary healthcare.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Age between 25 and 35 years.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field, Information Technology, or social sciences.
  • Demonstrated interest in public health, community projects or health-related NGOs, and leadership initiative.
  • Full-time availability for the duration of the fellowship (i.e., you should not be engaged in other full-time employment).
  • Must apply for and commit to the State and Local Government Area of your State of Origin; residence in that area is preferred.

Duration
The fellowship runs for 12 months, combining training, mentoring, placement in a local health setting, and fieldwork.

Deadline
The application opens on 1 November 2025.

Tips or FAQs: Guidance for Applicants

  • Prepare your documents in advance: You will need your CV/resume, degree certificate, NYSC discharge certificate, state of origin certificate, and potentially a reference letter from your university or organisation.
  • Focus your motivation statement: You’ll likely need to explain why you are drawn to primary health care, your leadership experience or community work, and how you plan to contribute. Avoid vague statements; provide specific examples.
  • Verify your LGA alignment: Make sure you apply for the Local Government Area tied to your state of origin and that you can commit to working/residing there during the fellowship.
  • Be ready for full-time commitment: If you hold another job or active contract, this may disqualify you since the fellowship is full-time.
  • Demonstrate analytics, drive and leadership: The programme emphasises analytical ability, entrepreneurial mindset, and leadership potential. Provide examples such as community project involvement, team-leading, or initiative taking.
  • Check eligibility and details carefully: Double-check your age, field of study, and other criteria before submitting to avoid disqualification.
  • Stay alert for updates: After application you may be shortlisted, interviewed or invited for further screening—check your email and phone for notifications.

How to Apply

  1. Visit the official application portal: Apply Here (Health Fellows)
  2. Complete the online form and upload required documents.
  3. Submit your application before the deadline of 1 November 2025.
  4. Monitor your email and phone for communication regarding shortlist and next steps.
