They are inviting students in Nigerian secondary schools to share their creative and practical ideas to prevent non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in their community.
Nigeria faces a growing burden of major NCDs, such as cardiovascular diseases, cancers, respiratory diseases, and diabetes. Behaviourial risk factors for these major NCDs include physical inactivity, excessive alcohol intake, unhealthy diet, air pollution, and tobacco use. These behaviors often start in adolescence. It is therefore necessary to create adequate awareness and sensitize youths on the prevention strategies of NCDs.
Interested adolescents are to make a submission on this topic: “Burden of NCD in Nigeria: My role as an NCD Prevention Champion”. Ideas should focus on how any or all of the five behavioural risk factors (physical inactivity, excessive alcohol intake, unhealthy diet, air pollution, and tobacco use) which contribute to major NCDs can be addressed in the community.
