Share

The Market-Oriented Value Chains for Jobs and Growth in the ECOWAS Region (MOVE) project aims to develop the rice sector in West Africa by working with the private sector and specifically rice processors.

One of the activities is the “Rice Miller Business Academy (RMBA) “which will run 5 training courses on the following topics:
2.1. Rice Mill Operations – in partnership with Bühler, as part of their International
Rice Milling Academy
2.2 Practical Marketing for Rice Mills
2.3. The Business of Rice Milling
2.4. Finance Essentials for Rice Mills
2.5. Developing Profitable Farmer Services

This call for applications is specifically for the course: The Business of Rice Milling which
will take place in Abuja, Nigeria from the 13th to the 15th of November 2023 (Address to be shared shortly).

Course Description:
Millers in Africa face tough choices about how to spend their scarce resources. Having a better understanding of the business of rice milling will enable millers to make thoughtful investment choices. This is the secret to predictable, planned growth.
The Business of Rice Milling course will empower millers to make informed investment decisions.
Milling executives will learn:
• The factors that lead to successful milling operations in West Africa. Important concepts such as source-make-sell; leading and lagging indicators and how to apply these to improve milling operations.
• The costs and benefits of investing in various activities such as outgrower programs,
sourcing standards, quality programs, upgrading milling equipment, preventative
maintenance programs etc.
• How to assess whether these various possible activities in source-make-sell as worthwhile
for their mill.

By the end of the training, participants will understand milling operations holistically, especially how source-make and sell investment choices affect leading and lagging indicators and ultimately the economic performance of rice mills.

Target mills
The course is aimed at medium-sized mills, preparing to scale up operations, upgrade equipment, and improve efficiency and rice quality. This is especially relevant for those mills looking to invest in more efficient, integrated rice mills. Please do not apply if your mill is a small artisanal mill, or if scaling up is not in your plans for the next 2-3 years.

Who can apply?
Mill managers / key decision makers in the mill.
To create a more inclusive rice sector, we especially encourage women to apply.

Those who are mill owners, mill managers, or in leadership teams will be at a distinct advantage.

Costs:
• GIZ (MOVE) will cover all costs (transport, lodging, and food during training).
• No per diems will be paid.

Deadline: 30th Oct 2023.
