The UNICEF Online Internship Program is designed to provide experiential learning in the humanitarian sector, supporting interns’ academic, professional, and personal development. Interns will be fully integrated into day-to-day activities, attending virtual meetings and collaborating on key initiatives that directly impact UNICEF’s programs and operations across various fields like education, child protection, communications, policy, and humanitarian response. This fully remote, paid opportunity allows participants to work with international teams on real-world projects that advance children’s rights and well-being worldwide.

Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the UNICEF Remote Internship Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Education

  • Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or PhD program.
  • Alternatively, have graduated within the past two years from an undergraduate, graduate, or PhD program.
  • Fields of study include (but are not limited to) international relations, social sciences, development studies, communications, public health, economics, IT, finance, environmental science, or a related discipline.

Experience & Skills

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Proficiency in at least one of UNICEF’s working languages: English, French, or Spanish. Fluency in the working language of the office you are applying to may also be required for specific roles.
  • Have a strong academic performance and clear motivation.
  • No prior professional work experience is typically required, but previous volunteer work, leadership roles in student organizations, or past internships are considered advantageous.
  • Must be proficient in commonly used digital tools such as Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, or similar collaboration platforms.
  • Applicants must not have immediate family members (e.g., mother, father, sister, brother) working at UNICEF, or any other relatives in their direct reporting line of authority.

Key Responsibilities
Interns in the UNICEF Remote Internship Program will typically undertake tasks that vary by department and project, but commonly include:

  • Conducting background research and preparing analytical reports on thematic issues.
  • Supporting data collection, entry, monitoring, and evaluation processes.
  • Drafting content for newsletters, social media, reports, and publications.
  • Assisting in organizing and coordinating virtual meetings and events.
  • Supporting project planning and coordination.
  • Maintaining intranet knowledge pages and managing institutional memory.
  • Contributing to the development of strategic briefings and policy documents.

Benefits

The UNICEF Remote Internship Program is fully funded and offers:

  • A monthly stipend of up to $1,700, depending on the intern’s location and funding availability.
  • A one-time lump sum to contribute towards travel and visa costs may also be granted when funding is available, even for remote positions if they lead to an in-person component or if the intern is required to be in a specific time zone with related costs.
  • Duration of internships typically ranges from 6 to 26 weeks, available on a full-time or part-time basis depending on the project and department needs.
  • The positions are fully remote, allowing participants to work from anywhere with stable internet access.
  • Interns gain invaluable insight into the workings of the United Nations and global NGOs, develop real-world skills, and build a professional network.
