Farmers across the 17 local government areas of Enugu State have received fertiliser support aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and strengthening food security. The initiative, led by Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, wife of Governor Peter Mbah, is part of her office’s empowerment programme designed to support registered farmers with essential inputs to enhance crop yields and improve livelihoods. Speaking during the distribution ceremony held on Wednesday in Enugu, Mrs. Mbah said the exercise was carried out in collaboration with the Enugu State Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation. She explained that fertiliser remains a critical input for increasing crop output, improving soil fertility, and ensuring sustainable food production across the state. “By empowering you with these fertilisers, we are strengthening the entire agricultural sector in our state. Increased crop output means more food on our tables, higher incomes for our families, and a more robust economy for Enugu,” Mrs. Mbah said. She noted that the gesture aligns with the state government’s broader goal of ensuring food sufficiency and reducing dependence on imported food items. “With enhanced production, we reduce the need for food imports, stabilise prices, and guarantee that no family goes hungry,” she added. Mrs. Mbah commended the State Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Patrick Ubru, for his dedication to advancing agricultural development and implementing programmes that empower local farmers. She also expressed appreciation to development partners, stakeholders, and agricultural experts for their collaboration in improving Enugu’s agrarian value chain through training, technical support, and sustainable practices. “It is not for storage or any other purpose than what it was intended for application to your farmland. I urge you to apply these fertilisers judiciously, with care and knowledge, to achieve the best possible results,” she advised beneficiaries. Speaking at the event, Commissioner Ubru, represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture, Mr. Mike Ogbuewu, said the distribution aligns with Governor Peter Mbah’s vision of making Enugu a hub for agricultural productivity and food sufficiency.
