The Centre for Digital Humanities at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) recently organized a three-day workshop aimed at equipping humanities students with essential digital skills. Held at the Faculty of Arts, the event, themed “Exploring Opportunities and Possibilities in Digital Humanities and Digital Cultures,” focused on bridging the digital competence gap among scholars in the humanities.
Prof. Tunde Ope-Davies, Director of CEDHUL, emphasized that the workshop was designed to empower students with the digital tools necessary for conducting research and contributing to national development. He noted, “This program will differentiate humanities graduates from those in the sciences by providing them with the skills needed to promote social benefit and transformation.”
Highlighting the significance of this initiative, Ope-Davies added, “This is the first center of its kind in Nigeria and Africa, placing UNILAG at the forefront and enhancing its global standing and societal impact.” He also expressed hope that the program would become an annual event, contingent on funding availability.
Prof. Folashade Ogunsola, Vice Chancellor of UNILAG, represented by Prof. Lucian Chukwu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), praised the workshop, noting that it aligns with the university’s goal of becoming a research-intensive institution. She commended Ope-Davies for his efforts in advancing the field of digital humanities, which connects technology with the humanities to further knowledge.
Special guest Adeyinka Adeyemi, Managing Director of Intermac Consulting, emphasized the importance of digital skills and tools in today’s digital era, recognizing CEDHUL’s role in fostering this essential knowledge among students.
