Crop Production Or Animal Husbandry
Share

Welcome on board, how have you been? Believe you are doing quite well at this time. Today we are going to look into a very interesting and sometimes argument-provoking question.

BETWEEN CROPS AND ANIMAL HUSBANDRY WHICH ONE IS MORE PROFITABLE?

Different answers will spring forth as regards this matter but I will give my own opinion based on my experience in this field.

  1. Most crops will mature for harvest faster than most animals will mature for sale, we have annual, biennial, and perennial crops, with this in mind, we see that a lot of annual crops mature in less than 6 months. This means you will most likely start making more money from crops than from animals.
  2. Many crops are affected by seasons and weather this means that if you farm just a particular type of crop, at some point in the year, you might be out of produce and this means no funds, but a good number of animals are in demand all year round.
  3. In terms of technicality, crop production seem much easier to understand than animal husbandry, especially the annual crops.
  4. If we look at the revenue aspect, a kg of animal produce might sell better than a kg of crop produce, we have ruminant livestock, non-ruminant, micro livestock, and fisheries, and each of these delivers prices different from the other.
  5. Crop production seems to need more land than animal husbandry, you might not need more than a plot of land to start your livestock production but you might need up to an acre to start a crop farm.
  6. Crop products are hardly affected by cultural or religious beliefs and barriers when compared to animal products, so with crops, you have few worries.
  7. In terms of disease outbreaks, I do believe the effects are almost the same but that of crops is a bit easier to manage.
  8. Finally, a single person can handle an animal farm successfully but in crop production, at some point you might need extra hands meaning, extra expenses and costs.

There you have it, I will categorically say that both are good ventures and I won’t put one over the other, you just need to choose the one that works best for you, master it, and focus on it.

Remember, the goal is not to prove a point to anyone or to compete with anyone, run at your own pace and get the desired results at your own pace.

Animal husbandry is lucrative so is crop production.

I wish you well in your farming endeavors
