The Edo State Government, in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), has relaunched an innovative jobs and skills centre at Evbuomodu, Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area, as part of efforts to enhance youth employability and tackle irregular migration.
Originally built in July 2000, the centre is part of a network of seven structures established by the Edo State Government to equip young people with technical and vocational skills, job matching, internships, and employment opportunities. The revamp of the facility, supported by the Government of Italy through the “Managing Migration through Development (MMDP) 2.0” project, includes major upgrades such as a 5KVA solar electrification system for 24-hour power, 17 computers, and new furniture to accommodate over 22 learning cubicles.
Speaking at the launch on October 11, 2024, IOM representative Wintana Tarekegn emphasized the importance of investing in human capital, stating, “Rehabilitating education infrastructures is not just about creating opportunities for individuals; it’s about laying the foundation for sustainable economic growth and social development. IOM is thrilled to be part of this initiative to help young people thrive and contribute to the prosperity of our communities.”
The IOM, alongside Edo State and local governments, is focused on addressing youth unemployment and the challenge of irregular migration through skills acquisition and job creation structures. The MMDP 2.0 project, implemented since 2022, has already helped over 300 young Nigerians gain essential livelihood skills, start small businesses, and achieve economic independence, including support for persons with disabilities.
This initiative reflects a broader effort to empower Edo’s youth, reduce vulnerability to human trafficking, and foster socio-economic stability across communities.
