Effect of Climate Change on Your Farm Activities (2)
Share

Welcome back, last time we started discussion on Climate Change and how it can affect you as a farmer. This time we will continue the discourse we go deeper as we try to see the ways humans try to manage climate change.

It is worthy of note that climate change is a man-made issue for example activities that emit greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, greenhouse gases from automobiles that utilize fossil fuels, fermentation processes in the gut of ruminant animals etc.

As discussed last time, there are two approaches to facing Climate Change:

  1. Adaptation
  2. Mitigation

ADAPTATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE

This means we try to cope with it, we try to position ourselves in ways whereby we won’t feel the effect of climate change that much. We can achieve this through but not limited to the following:

  • Long Term Planning: This means we observe the weather pattern critically and then we make our plans to ensure when such occurrences take place we are not caught unawares. As we can see in some places we have heavy rainfall while at the same time in some places they complain of drought, understanding this patterns can fuel our planning
  • Warning Systems/Mechanism: It might have to do with weather forecasting, disaster forecasting so that farmers can be kept abreast of what is to happen so they can avert such issues.
  • Restoration of Depleted Ecosystem: We see how we can restore the depleted flora and fauna in our surroundings this is necessary as each flora and fauna has their own uses.

MITIGATION OF CLIMATE CHANGE

This involves reducing the activities that can promote or increase the effects of climate change on the planet. We mean cutting down greenhouse gases from their sources like cars, farms, factories etc. We act to preserve the future by reducing greenhouse gases emission.

We can do this by utilizing any of the following:

  • Use of renewable energy like solar energy in our homes, farms and apartments.
  • Reforestation and Afforestation (Tree Planting)
  • Climate friendly Agricultural initiatives
  • Use of automobiles and machines that run on renewable energy.

Scientists belief that a combination of both Mitigation and Adaptation to climate change is best and will give the desired results.

We have the issue at hand, let’s arise and support the fight against climate change and its inherent challenges.

To your success

Adegbamigbe Adewumi.
