The Ekiti State Government has introduced a six-month rent-free initiative for street traders, offering stalls and shops at key markets, including Oja Oba, Agric-Olope, and Awedele. This initiative, designed to curb street trading and boost business activities, was announced by the Commissioner for Trade, Industry, Investment, and Cooperatives, Mrs. Omotayo Adeola, during a broadcast across Ekiti and parts of Ondo State.
The rent-free initiative, launched to commemorate the second anniversary of Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration, aims to support small traders while filling vacant shops in the state’s markets. Mrs. Adeola explained that the new policy transitions from long-term, 15-year shop leases to more flexible, annual rental agreements, beginning with the six-month rent-free period.
While traders will not pay rent, they are expected to cover utility costs, including electricity and sanitation, to maintain market cleanliness. The policy is seen as a significant move to help small business owners and revitalize the state’s market hubs.
Traders interested in securing space at the Oja Oba market are encouraged to apply at the facility management office, where they can submit their personal and business details for registration.
This initiative aligns with the government’s broader efforts to stimulate economic growth and provide support to small businesses in Ekiti State.
