The Federal Government has empowered 700 farmers in Edo State, providing them with resources to boost their agricultural activities. Among the beneficiaries are 200 poultry farmers who received day-old chicks and 500 cassava farmers who were provided with cassava cuttings. The initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainable agricultural development and food security across Nigeria.
During the empowerment program held in Benin City, Samuel Owoicho, Edo State Coordinator for the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, highlighted the importance of the initiative. “By supporting these hardworking farmers, we not only enhance their livelihoods but also strengthen Edo’s economy. Their success will inspire further growth in the sector,” he said. Owoicho emphasized that the program represents a major milestone for the state and the nation in advancing the agricultural sector.
The initiative aligns with the ministry’s mission to improve food security and boost the livelihoods of smallholder farmers through sustainable agricultural practices. Owoicho further explained that the program is a reflection of the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, to advancing Nigeria’s agricultural development.
Through this initiative, farmers will gain new knowledge and skills in modern farming techniques, which will help improve productivity and increase their income. The program is driven by a collaboration between the Federal Department of Agricultural Extension Services and SANCT International Nigeria Limited. This partnership focuses on promoting sustainable agriculture, strengthening the agricultural value chain, and ensuring food security while reducing poverty and fostering economic growth.
Owoicho encouraged the participating farmers to actively engage in the training, adopt the new technologies, and apply the knowledge gained in their operations. He also urged them to share their experiences with fellow farmers, join cooperatives, and take advantage of the various government support services available to them.
In his remarks, Peter Osagie, Permanent Secretary of the Edo State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, commended the Federal Government for its efforts in empowering farmers. “By equipping these farmers, we are investing in the future of Edo State, ensuring that our agricultural sector continues to thrive. We appreciate the dedication of our farmers, whose hard work is the backbone of our state’s economy,” Osagie said.
He added that the state ministry remains committed to supporting farmers through fostering innovation and driving growth in the agricultural sector. “Together, we will build a prosperous and food-secure state, where agriculture plays a pivotal role in our economic development,” he concluded.
This empowerment program marks another step toward strengthening Nigeria’s agricultural sector, ensuring food security, and improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Edo State and beyond.
